Temptation and How to Resist It (Maybe).

It's so hard to resist a bet... well, that horse could win... I must have something on it...

Familiar thinking?

Here's a way to try to tighten it all up, but it takes strength of betting character. Just note the likely winner (in your opinion) of every race at a major meeting (say Randwick or Moonee Valley).

Just one rule: All your picks MUST be at $6 or more prepost.

Can you do it? In the name of betting science?

Not outlandish prices, just 5/1 or more.

Try.

If you get just one winner, would it have covered all the other losers?

Maybe you'll pick very few winners.

Maybe even none.

So what then of the ones that seemed to be real chances?

It's a very sobering exercise, this one. Makes us realise how hard the game is. And that, on our own, we face an enormous task.

The answer?

Fewer bets, more care with each of them. Strong, proven support (perhaps a battery of good systems and a good selection program).

The age of just "getting lucky" is, in my view, a bit like John Cleese's dead parrot. Very much ex.
