Trainer Matthew Smith is likely to resist the temptation to throw promising filly Hurtle Myrtle in the deep end despite nominating her for The Rosebud at Rosehill.

The youngster is among 20 entries for the 1200 metre Golden Rose lead up on Saturday alongside the likes of exciting colt Hus Der Lieften and stakes placegetter Lovemelikearock.

However, Smith has also accepted with Hurtle Myrtle for the Freeway Republic Beer Maiden Hcp (1200m) at Canterbury on Wednesday and is favouring starting her in the easier assignment.

"I'm not one hundred percent sure but I'm leaning towards Wednesday," Smith said.

"I just want to see how she measures up and hopefully we can crack it for a better race later on.

"Canterbury might be the best way to go.

"I think she'll get better over more distance and could get up to a mile (1600m) but until we try her we're not totally sure."

A daughter of 2004 Ming Dynasty winner Dane Shadow, the two-year-old has raced twice with her best result a third to Fear No Other in the Inglis Classic (1200m) at Randwick in January.

She ran fifth to one-time Golden Slipper favourite More Joyous over 1100 metres at Rosehill on January 17 at her only other start.

Hurtle Myrtle has had two barrier trials this month finishing second to Dystopia at her most recent hitout at Rosehill last Tuesday.

"She's trialled well and continues to develop nicely but she is probably still a bit immature and will get better as a late three-year-old," Smith said.

Dane Shadow has made a great start to his stallion career and is third on the list of leading first season sires by prizemoney with his progeny having won more than $650,000 in stakes this season.

He trails only Charge Forward and Fastnet Rock whose stock have won more than $1.15 million and $900,000 respectively.
