Gathering the Leftovers

I have long held the view that the racing on a Monday (or Tuesday!) of a long weekend holiday can be disastrous for the ordinary punter.

Occasionally, of course, you'll get a good race, or even a good program. but usually it's for the ones that didn't make the top races a few days earlier. You won't have heard of some of the runners. They turn up from everywhere in the hope of stealing a city race and acquiring some status.

I have a handful of suggestions about "holiday races":

1. Look for horses with a 50% win strike rate from at least six starts.

2. Limit these contenders to horses that won their last start or second last start (or both).

3. Get rid of any that are racing first up after a spell of 90 days or greater.

4. Delete any race with two qualifiers.

5. Keep your win bets small.

6. Link your contestants into place multiples.

My reasoning is that this is for a bit of fun, with a chance of a decent win. At least you know you're on winners that like to win and DO win.

By the rule 1 definition, they must have won at least three races in their career.

And if they are not quite up to the mark, they could still figure in the placings in these weak city races.

Remember to keep the bets small and live to fight another day, while enjoying this one.
