NEW ZEALAND trainer John Wheeler is eyeing off tomorrow's Queensland Oaks but fears his main danger may come from the stable of one of his former apprentices, reports Craig Young in the Sydney Morning Herald.

His report adds: The final classic for fillies this season is dominated by the Kiwis, with six NZ-trained fillies among the 19 vying for group 1 honours -- and Wheeler warned that the toughest to beat would be Ekstreme, who is trained by former jockey Bryce Revell.

Wheeler will start Juice in the 2400-metre staying contest while others from across the Tasman are Doomben Roses winner Awesome Planet, Can't Keeper Down, Prix Du Sang and Walk In The Park.

The Revell-trained Ekstreme heads markets on the Oaks, having made her Australian debut when a luckless second behind Awesome Planet at Doomben a fortnight ago.

"He (Revell) was apprenticed to me, so I should know him," Wheeler said yesterday. "He rode my first Great Eastern Steeplechase winner at Oakbank. It was on a horse called Touch Judge back in '93.

"He started with me when he was about 14 and was probably with me for six to eight years. He is a good bloke, trains well and has the horse at concert pitch."

Wheeler remembers Revell telling him Ekstreme was going to make it as a racehorse. "Bryce was tipping it before it started racing and I've watched it all the way through," Wheeler said.

"It didn't race effectively early on, wanted to get up and race, but once it got up over a bit of ground and he got it settled she has been a good horse ever since.

"She is a plain horse but she struck trouble early in the Doomben Roses, got knocked over -- it was a super run to finish second."
