AT THE corresponding Flemington meeting last year, trainer Peter Snowden won the 1000-metre two-year-old race with Denman, who went on to win at group 1 level before heading overseas, reports the Sunday Age.

It says: Yesterday, the huge Darley operation for which Snowden trains again took out the event, this time with a first-starter named Soul, whose dam Marvilha is a half-sister to Denman.

While foreman Paul Snowden feels there is a good future for the son of Commands, Soul is unlikely to replicate the deeds of his illustrious relative.

''He's a smart sprinter but I don't think he's quite in the same category [as Denman],'' Snowden said.

In yesterday's race, Soul ($12) settled nicely just off the speed before coming with a strong run to peg back the much-hyped Breitling ($2.35), who had been heavily supported in pre-post markets.

Snowden said he had recommended to his father that Soul make his debut on the straight course after a strong trial at Flemington three weeks ago. ''You don't necessarily have to be the best horse to win down the straight. You just have to do everything right and this bloke falls into that category,'' Snowden said.

Snowden said Soul still had a lot of growing to do and plans for him were undecided.
