GLEN BOSS cranked up his bid to claim a fourth Melbourne Cup when he partnered imported stallion Changingoftheguard in a solid workout at Sandown yesterday morning, reports Craig Young in the Sydney Morning Herald.

His report adds: Changingoftheguard, prepared by Melbourne Cup-winning trainer David Hayes, has recovered from a foot abscess and was one of 42 runner's left in Tuesday's $5.6 million race when third declarations were taken yesterday.

"I've been doing a bit of work on him and have taken a shine to him," Boss said yesterday. "He is a very athletic horse, not big but a very good mover, very tough bugger. And he had good form before he came over here."

Boss described the Sandown exercise, which included a hit-out over 1600 metres, as "quality work", and was not concerned about the foot abscess. "We're over that now, it was a little hurdle," he said. "We are learning a lot about him.

"He seems to be the right horse [for the Cup]. He has that turn of foot, and he is very fit."

Hayes considered running Changingoftheguard in Saturday's group 1 Mackinnon Stakes but the stayer will not make the field despite being 10th in the Melbourne Cup's elimination order.
