Winter King will force his way into calculations for the $1 million Golden Rose with a big run in Saturday's San Domenico Stakes at Randwick.

Trainer David Payne, who returned this week from a holiday in Mexico, was originally going to keep Winter King to sprint distances and bypass the Group One 1400-metre Golden Rose at Rosehill on August 29.

"If he stacks up Saturday then why not, it's a $1 million race," Payne said.

"We'll pay up before the cut-off date on August 24 if he does well at Randwick."

Winter King has $98,030 in prizemoney, a figure that is better than the 17th-placed horse Bombay Sling ($95,625) in the order of entry for the Golden Rose which was released by the Sydney Turf Club on Tuesday.

Victory in the San Domenico would add a further $75,000 to Winter King's earnings and surely cement his place in the Golden Rose.

Golden Slipper winner Phelan Ready heads the order of entry but connections would have to pay the $50,000 late entry fee because he wasn't among the original nominations for last year's Slipper in which he was a late entry.

The Gerald Ryan-trained Rothesay, who also runs in the San Domenico, sits 43rd on the order of entry with $42,000 but is another whose connections would have to pay the late entry fee for the Golden Rose.

Winter King comes into Saturday's Group Three Randwick feature after three successive wins with the most recent a short neck victory over Speeding To Win at the same venue over 1000 metres on July 25.

"He's done it tough, big weights on bog tracks and he's still been finishing off strongly," Payne said.

"He missed the break and knuckled over at the start, everything went wrong for him and he still won.

"He carried 59.5kg the other day, it was a big effort."

Payne also has Cortina Gal running in the San Domenico and says she has done well since her barrier trial win at Rosehill on July 21.

Cortina Gal was a last-start fourth to Military Gal over 1100 metres at Rosehill on June 27.

"She's a nice speedy filly and I'm expecting her to be pretty forward on Saturday," Payne said.

"She really looks like a 1000-metre horse."

"She had a big weight (58kg) on her back on a heavy track, it was a big ask for her but she still did well."
