Hardy Tasmanian galloper Conquering will be chasing his career-best win in the Group Two Blamey Stakes at Flemington on Saturday.

Trainer Charlie Goggin has aimed the very much in-form six-year-old at the $300,000 set weights plus penalties event over 1600m for some time with the thinking that the topliners would miss it having run in the Australian Cup a week earlier.

The gelding, by Danehill stallion Dangerous, is shooting for his sixth successive win having dominated weight-for-age racing in Tasmania over the summer.

He has won at Listed level from 1200m to 1600m at his past four starts and has been very honest throughout his career having won eight of his past 10 starts.

He is after his 20th win at what will be his 54th start and has also run second on 11 occasions and third four times.

Last spring Conquering won over 1519m at Moonee Valley and also claimed the Listed D'Urban Quality (1700m) when he defeated subsequent Australian Cup placegetter Zagreb at Caulfield.

He was later runner-up to Sea Battle in the Group Two Crystal Mile (1600m) at Moonee Valley and finished seventh to All Silent in the Group One Emirates Stakes (1600m) at Flemington.

"He ran second at Group Two level at Moonee Valley last spring and this looks a good race for him," Goggin said of Conquering who was bred by Runnymede Racing and Breeding Pty Ltd, managed by his wife Lindy.

"The last six months he's really improved. I'd like to think he could keep on improving but I'm very happy with him at the moment.

"This will be harder than what he has been up against of late but no tougher than the Group Two he ran second in at the Valley last spring."

Goggin attributes Conquering's improvement to maturity.

"He used to lay in and out and move away from other horses. Now when he's put under pressure he's racing more truly and getting to the line and it's made a big difference to him," he said.

"He goes along at a high cruising speed and he's a great trier. He's one of those horses who thrives on racing."

Goggin said he felt Conquering's best distance was 1600m to 1800m when there was less early pressure on the freegoing galloper.

He was impressed with the horse's last-start effort in the George Adams Plate (1600m) at Launceston when he bowled along in front and was never threatened before scoring by 3-1/4 lengths.

Conquering has settled in well since being flown to Melbourne last Friday and he is staying at Mat Ellerton's Kensington stables near Flemington where he is being looked after by Goggin's foreman Michael Voss.

"He's settled in well, he worked well on Tuesday and I am looking forward to Saturday," Goggin said.

Among the horses Conquering will be up against on Saturday are Annenkov, last year's Blamey runner-up Barlinnie, Largo Lad, Marching, Mentality, Orange County, Playwright, Rockpecker, Time Matters and Villain.

Owner Lloyd Williams will run either Melbourne Cup placegetter C'est La Guerre or dual Sandown Classic winner Zipping in the Blamey.
