The decision to geld five-year-old Wind Shear has led to him breaking through for his feature win in the Listed Auckland Racing Club Handicap at Flemington.

Trainer Dale Sutton said the son of Flying Spur had always been easy to manage but had learned to settle better in his races this campaign.

"This is the first preparation since he's been gelded and it has turned him around," Sutton said.

"He is still the same at home but at the races he have noticed the difference with him settling a lot more.

"He has had a turn of foot the whole preparation and even in slow races he's made ground."

Ridden by Stephen Baster on Sunday, Wind Shear launched his winning run from worse than midfield to score by 1-3/4 lengths from pacemaker Excelltastic and Delayedreaction, who also ran on well.

Only a small horse, big weights have hindered Wind Shear's career.

The Auckland Racing Club Handicap (1600m) was only his fourth win but as a younger horse he promised to win a good race.

As a three-year-old he was a long neck third to Schilling in the Sandown Guineas (1600m) and second to Heart Of The Citi in the Gold Coast Magic Millions 3YO Trophy (1400m).

He was entered at Sandown on Saturday but when he drew an outside barrier Sutton decided to hold off a day and run him at Flemington.

"We have been wanting to step him up over ground but thought this would be an ideal race for him with the drop in weight," Sutton said.

Baster said Wind Shear had been one of his favourite horses but he had never won on him until Sunday.

His last win was at Caulfield when ridden by Brenton Avdulla in a restricted grade on Boxing Day in 2008.

"This race had nice speed in it and with him now settling really well and with 53 kilos on his back I thought he would be hard to beat," Baster said.

"He's been carrying 59 in races and he just can't carry the weight."

Wind Shear was Sutton's third stakes success this season after La Rocket won the Listed Seymour Cup and the Group Two St George Stakes.
