Owner Lloyd Williams may try to win his third Sydney Cup with his favourite horse Renewable who took out the $100,000 Roy Higgins Quality at Flemington on Saturday.

The Zabeel seven-year-old has had a history of leg problems since his three-year-old days when he won three of his first four starts in Melbourne including the Group Two Autumn Classic (1800m) at Caulfield.

He went amiss in the Group Two Tulloch Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill in March 2005 and has had a stop-start career since.

At his fifth run back from a two-year layoff he won the $150,000 Moonee Valley Night Cup (2500m) late last month and made it two straight over the same trip on Saturday at just his 13th start.

Ridden by Steven Arnold, Renewable ($2.70 fav) battled on gamely to beat Ista Kareem ($3.30) by a long neck with Growl ($3.60) 4-1/4 lengths away third.

The win completed a double for Arnold who led all the way on the Gary Portelli-trained filly Zarock ($5.50) in the Streets Ice Cream Sprint (1000m).

Williams won the Sydney Cup with the John Meagher-trained Major Drive, who was part-owned by the late Kerry Packer, in 1987 and with Gallic in 2007.

Williams' son Nick hinted Renewable could be heading to the Group One $700,000 race at Randwick on April 25.

"He's a horse who over the last four years hasn't run very often. He's been entered in our dispersal sales, they've been entered by N Williams and withdrawn by L Williams," Nick Williams said.

"He's a horse who's very dear to Dad's heart and in winning at Moonee Valley, for Dad was as great a thrill as winning a Melbourne Cup.

"So let's hope he can tread the boards as Gallic did and head up to the Sydney Cup.

"You've got to hope. He's seven years old and he's going as well as he's ever gone. It would be great if he could get that far.

"It's been a great effort by John (trainer John Sadler) and the boys getting him back."
