Punters have gone cold on the chances of Melito in Saturday's Golden Slipper and the filly's trainer Gerald Ryan admits he has concerns about the wet track.

But he doesn't think Melito will be any more or less disadvantaged than any other runner and has faith she is right in the mix.

Melito has eased with TAB Sportsbet from $17 to $26, the price she was when first markets were posted.

Earlier this week the filly worked in the blinkers she will wear on race day and Ryan was extremely happy with her performance.

That happiness was tempered when the rain came.

"I was excited after Monday but the weather soon dampened my enthusiasm," Ryan said.

"On a wet track and with the blinkers she will be ridden further back - probably somewhere between fourth and midfield.

"She's out to too long a price, I don't think she's a $26 chance.

"I'm not saying she doesn't handle the wet. She's just not as good on it, but she might be good enough.

"Like everyone else we won't know until race day."

At her first start, Melito finished second to Horizons in the Widden Stakes on a slow track.

She assured herself of a place in the Slipper with victory in the Silver Slipper Stakes but the gloss was taken off that win by the antics of More Joyous who acted up at the start and took no part.

More Joyous beat Melito in the Reisling Stakes on a dead track with Ryan and jockey Danny Nikolic undecided whether it was the damp surface or a lack of concentration which stopped her stretching out as she did in the Silver Slipper.

The combination of Ryan and Nikolic is trying to go one better than 13 years ago when Paint ran second to Merlene in one of the most controversial Slippers in modern times.

Merlene's jockey Greg Hall was handed a lengthy ban and a hefty fine for crossing in front of half the field on the home turn in his desperation to win the race.

"Paint was a great horse to me and I was never disappointed in him," Ryan said.

"Merlene probably deserved to win the race anyway.

"We are here again and Melito is my best chance since him."
