The Gai Waterhouse-trained Rockwood will back up in the Group Three Summer Cup at Randwick before embarking on a Tasmanian campaign early in the new year.

Rockwood comes into the 2400 metre Boxing Day feature after a sixth to Palacio De Cristal in the Group Two Villiers Stakes (1600m) at Randwick last Saturday.

Waterhouse is chasing her fifth Summer Cup after victories with Aqua D'Amore in 2005, Stoway three years earlier, Zanetta in 1999 and Linesman two years before that.

While Rockwood is rising steeply in distance, it is a formula Waterhouse has used successfully with Aqua D'More who won the Villiers before backing up to claim the Summer Cup.

"It's a weak event and it's a $125,000 race and he would be sitting in Tulloch Lodge if he wasn't running," Waterhouse said.

"As a three-year-old he won over 2000 metres and if they don't get blooded this time of year, how in the devil are they going to get ready for Caulfield Cups and races like that.

"I'll give him a bit of a let-up in the yard and then I'll find a race for him at the end of January and send him to Tasmania."

The Hobart Cup (2200m) and Launceston Cup (2400m) in February are the likely Tasmanian options Waterhouse will consider for the, now, five-year-old.

"He's out of one of the best mares to come out of New Zealand, Foxwood, and he's as fit as a fiddle and is ready for duty," Waterhouse said.

Foxwood won two Group One races in New Zealand, the 1998 Captain Cook Stakes and 1997 New Zealand 2000 Guineas, both over 1600m.

Rockwood has topweight of 58kg on Saturday and will be ridden by Nash Rawiller from his good barrier draw in two.

While Waterhouse didn't show her hand tactically, she said last start Christmas Cup winner Scouting Wide would not have things his own way in front on Saturday.

The Tim Martin-trained Scouting Wide dictated terms in the 2400 metre race at Rosehill on December 12 when he defeated Bright Mind by a neck.

"No way in the world will that be happening, he won't be getting away with any of that," Waterhouse said.

"Our horse is very well placed for this race and he will win."
