Highly-strung Texan Warney will try for his first Melbourne win at Flemington on Saturday with trainer Darryl Dodson favouring the longer of two races the stayer is nominated for.

Dodson said the galloper was a "management job" because of different issues.

"He's nutty but handy. He doesn't have a lot of brains unfortunately," Dodson said.

"He's livewire, he shies at things. He's a highly-strung, nervous animal."

Dodson entered Texan Warney for the Bitalli Handicap (2000m) and the $100,000 Cleanevent Handicap (2500m).

The homebred, by Gallo Di Ferro out of Flemington and Moonee Valley winner Nene Valley, has made the trip from Dodson's Telopia Downs property in north-western Victoria for three previous unplaced city runs.

However, he has done well elsewhere winning eight races and placing in another four of his 28 starts.

"His mother was a dead-set stayer but he showed real sprint ability initially but he didn't seem to want to do it, it was just too much for him," Dodson said.

"He showed us good speed but never produced it on raceday until we got to a bit more of a staying distance and I suppose he grew up a bit too and eventually got it together."

Dodson said Texan Warney's nerves had improved a lot with maturity.

"He used to get to the races a sweaty mess but now he can at least get there comfortably and do that part alright," he said.

The five-year-old has won three of his nine starts this preparation including the Horsham Cup (1800m) and twice at Morphettville which was the scene of his last-start 2250m victory on December 4 over subsequent Adelaide winner Gotta Keep Cool.

Horsham-based jockey Holly McKechnie, who has won six races aboard Texan Warney including his Horsham Cup victory and three wins at Morphettville, will retain the ride.

"She knows his traits so well and we're very happy to have her on. She's doing the job well," Dodson said.

Dodson said if he could win on Saturday, he would betempted to give him a crack at the Listed $150,000 Bagot Handicap (2800m) at Flemington on New Year's Day.

But if he fails he will lower his sights and look for a suitable race in Adelaide.

"Winning is the name of the game," Dodson said.
