Guy Walter has enlisted old friend Robert Thompson to assist his attack on the feature races at the upcoming Grafton carnival.

Thompson will be bidding for a third consecutive victory in the Ramornie Handicap (1200m) when he rides Fighting Fund and will take the reins on Twin Wing in the Grafton Cup (2350m).

The veteran jockey was part of a watershed in Walter's career when he steered Sharscay to win the 1995 Canterbury Guineas, the first Group One success of the trainer's career.

"Robert will ride both horses," Walter said.

"Fighting Fund has had a bit of a break and goes into the race fresh which is how he races best.

"He trialled well recently and I'm happy with him.

"Twin Wing likes wet tracks so hopefully he gets conditions to suit."

The popular Thompson, who passed Jack Thompson's Australian riding record last year, rode The Jackal to victory in the 2007 and 2008 runnings of the Ramornie.

His sole Grafton Cup success came in 1981 aboard My Star Sapphire trained by his father Arthur.

Fighting Fund won the 2006 Rowley Mile and Scone Cup (1600m) but has had mixed fortunes since with Walter keeping him to sprint distances.

He had the misfortune to run into Hot Danish at the top of her game in the Group Two Salinger Stakes (1200m) at Flemington last November, finishing a half-length second to the mare.

His Newmarket Handicap bid was over before it started when he was withdrawn after breaking through the barrier when spooked by another horse.

He showed his fitness with a solid third in a Warwick Farm barrier trial late last month on a heavy surface.

The free-running Twin Wing will be seeking his first win since he took out the 2008 Lord Mayor's Cup (2400m) at Rosehill.

Twin Wing has run third at his past three starts including the Stayers' Cup won by Nuclear Sky and the Winter Cup taken out by Niwot.

On both occasions, Twin Wing did the hard work in front only to be run down in the final stages.

The Ramornie is on July 15 with the Cup the following day.
