Chris Waller believes Group One-winning sprinter Danleigh is the proven horse in Saturday's Group Two Expressway Stakes, and punters certainly agree with the Rosehill trainer.
Danleigh has been strongly supported since markets were released on Thursday, firming from an opening quote of $7 in to favouritism at $3 with TAB Sportsbet.
He overhauled stablemate Rangirangdoo ($3.40) at the top of betting for the 1200m weight-for-age event.
The trainer is confident the pair have the right foundation to handle their first-up assignment on a rain-affected track.
"We never push Danleigh in trials and our team work hard to keep him nice and sound. He's a bit hard to get a gauge on until race day but he's done everything the same as last preparation and he won the Manikato Stakes first-up last time which is a Group One at weight-for-age," Waller said.
"Tomorrow there are some nice horses in the race but he's the tried and true horse in my opinion, he's proven himself and is the one to beat."
Danleigh has twice won at Group One level - last year's All-Aged Stakes (1400m) and Manikato Stakes (1200m) - and has an excellent record on wet tracks.
The son of Mujahid has won four from four on slow tracks, including both Group One triumphs, and ran second in last year's Stradbroke Handicap on a heavy track.
Rangirangdoo, on the other hand, is yet to win a Group One but Waller is hoping that is only a matter of time.
The lightly-raced five-year-old just failed to win the Epsom Handicap last preparation before scoring a dominant 3-1/2 length victory on Cox Plate day at Moonee Valley in the Group Two Crystal Mile.
He hasn't raced since finishing seventh as favourite in the Group One Mackinnon Stakes on October 31 at his first try at 2000m.
"With Rangi, it would be nice to see him win a Group One (this preparation)," Waller said.
"He ran second in one last preparation and really that was only his second serious preparation.
"I think the trip to Melbourne helped and now he is a more mature and smarter horse.
"We're hoping he can take that next step, he'll be up against some stiff opposition all the way through but I think he's improved."
Track manager Lindsay Murphy said the surface would be heavy after 57mm of rain fell on course between Wednesday and Friday morning and another storm hit on Friday afternoon.
"The forecast is for showers to keep coming through the night, on and off, with rain periods tomorrow (Saturday) so it's going to be heavy," Murphy said.
