Brayroan will take his first steps towards the Epsom Handicap when he resumes on Saturday and trainer Chris Waller predicts a good preparation is ahead of the lightly-raced galloper.

The winner of four of his nine starts, Brayroan makes his return in the Sydney Banana Wholesalers Handicap (1400m) at Rosehill where he is the $3.60 favourite.

After Brayroan won over 1600m at Randwick in January, Waller revealed he wanted to bring the son of Zabeel back after a spell and have "a serious crack at a race like the Epsom" this spring.

The premiership leader maintains that is still the case.

"It is, without getting carried away, and he'll take small steps towards it," Waller said.

"We did a similar thing with Rangirangdoo a couple of years ago, we spaced his runs and ran him when the time was right and he just got beaten a nose in the Epsom that year before going to Melbourne to win a good race.

"We'll try and follow a similar path (with Brayroan)."

Four-year-old Brayroan has had two barrier trials ahead of his return including a soft hitout over 1030m on Tuesday at Rosehill where he finished seventh of the eight runners.

Waller said the gelding, who will be ridden by Glyn Schofield, had returned in great order.

"He's a typical Zabeel horse that has continued to mature and I think he's in for a pretty good preparation," Waller said.
