Rockwood will get the chance to put his Villiers Stakes campaign back on track when he steps out in a barrier trial at Rosehill on Tuesday.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained gelding was sent out favourite in Saturday's Festival Stakes won by Rabbuka but was lucky to stay on his feet when he was the chief sufferer in an ugly scrimmage 200 metres after the start.

He was found to have heart arrhythmia after the race and was ordered to trial, but has shown no other signs of his ordeal.

"We had the vets go over him on the weekend and they were amazed they couldn't find anything wrong," Waterhouse's racing manager Robyn Hartney said.

"Then our physio went over him today and he couldn't believe the horse didn't have aches and pains everywhere the way he was twisted inside out."

Rockwood will line up in one of the 900m Open trials at Rosehill on Tuesday and if he comes through it well, the Villiers Stakes will be back on his agenda.

"That's the reason Gai wanted him to trial on Tuesday once the vets found there was nothing wrong," Hartney said.

Waterhouse could have up to three runners in the Villiers with Festival Stakes winner Rabbuka and Saturday's Rosehill entrant Joku also headed towards the summer feature.

Meanwhile, Waterhouse is on the lookout for a new apprentice after Brenton Avdulla decided against extending his stay with the stable to link with fellow Randwick trainer Anthony Cummings.

Avdulla was based with John Moloney in Victoria before being enticed to Sydney by Waterhouse when her previous apprentice Daniel Ganderton broke his leg in a fall at Newcastle in September.

Ganderton, who is due to return to the saddle this weekend, found himself in hot water with stewards on Monday following comments he posted on his Facebook site.

He was fined $1000 for conduct prejudicial to the image of racing.
