An impressive win by Viking Hero in Saturday's Alister Clark Stakes at Moonee Valley could sway connections into running the colt in next month's Group One Australian Guineas at Flemington.
The Elvstroem three-year-old resumed with a pleasing fourth to At The Heads over 1300m at Sandown on January 23 and meets that colt a kilogram better under the set weights conditions of the 1600m Group Two event.
"We're very happy with him. He's up to the mile which he'll appreciate," Anthony Feroce, stable manager for trainer Mike Moroney, said.
"We're hoping he can handle the tight Valley track and if he does he'll improve. He's coming along well.
"He's heading towards the AJC Australian Derby.
"He's nominated for the Australian Guineas but the plan was to run next in the Autumn Stakes at Caulfield over 1800 metres.
"However if he won tomorrow and was very impressive we'd look at the Australian Guineas, we'd have a discussion with the owners."
Viking Hero is at $41 for the Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on March 6 in which Denman is $2.50 favourite with TAB Sportsbet.
Glen Boss will ride Viking Hero ($12) in the Clark in which the Robert Hickmott-trained Linton is $3.70 favourite ahead of Extra Zero at $4 and Offhanded at $4.40.
The Moroney stable is looking for an improved showing from Divine Rebel in the Group Two Sunline Stakes (1600m) after she ran last at her two starts since returning from a nine-month layoff.
The Don Eduardo five-year-old won the Epona Stakes (1900m) at Rosehill and the Chairman's Stakes (2600m) at Randwick before finishing runner-up to Ista Kareem in the Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick on April 25 last year.
Feroce said the mare had recovered from an injury suffered after that.
"She had a tiny hole in a branch of the suspensory," he said.
"She looks terrific and has worked really well, we'd expect now over a mile she should start showing something.
"We're getting her ready for Sydney. She'll possibly run in The BMW on her way to the Sydney Cup."
Nick Hall will take the mount on Divine Rebel ($21).
The Pat Hyland-trained Zarita is $2 favourite for the mares weight-for-age race ahead of Rolling Stock and Silvercitymiss at $6.50 with Casual Friday at $8 and Pagan Princess at $9.
