Viking Legend has always displayed plenty of ability to trainer Gai Waterhouse but it was his last-start win in the Listed Dulcify Quality where the colt showed her more attributes to go with his class.

The Elvstroem colt, who has two wins from seven starts, had his final gallop at Randwick on Thursday ahead of Saturday's Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at the same venue.

Waterhouse is chasing her fourth victory in the Group One race after the wins of Nothin' Leica Dane (1995), Magic Of Sydney (1996) and Platinum Scissors (2002).

Viking Legend comes into the Spring Champion after producing an outstanding performance last Saturday to win the Dulcify (1800m) at Randwick.

The colt, who normally races close to the speed, was given a quiet ride to avoid the prevalent strong winds.

But rather than a nice quiet ride, it was a fairly torrid affair.

Near the 1400 metres he was bumped by Well Handled and Viking Legend's rider Blake Shinn had to check his mount and eventually shuffled back to be close to last.

The incident resulted in Well Handled's rider Tim Clark being handed a five-meeting suspension for shifting in when insufficiently clear of Viking Legend.

Viking Legend only had a couple of horses in front of him near the 400 metres before he let down with a strong run, going on to defeat Saint Encosta by a neck.

"He showed me he's got versatility and plenty of courage," Waterhouse said.

"His win was very courageous. He's improved with every run and he's improved as we've gone over further distance.

"He can be on the speed or back in the field, it was very pleasing to see him show that versatility."

Viking Legend came into the Dulcify after a long neck second to Spring Champion hopeful Lovemelikearock in the Group Three Spring Stakes (1600m) at Newcastle on September 16 when he travelled in second spot throughout.

In February, Viking Legend led all the way when he broke his maiden status at Moonee Valley at his second start.

Viking Legend has drawn barrier one for the Spring Champion Stakes and while she didn't get into the tactics that will be adopted on Saturday, Waterhouse dropped a hint as to what might occur if the conditions suit.

"He had no choice in the Dulcify, he had 25 kilometre winds and you look at the horse that led and where it ran, it's still running the poor bugger," Waterhouse said.

TAB Sportsbet has Onemorenomore as $2.30 favourite ahead of Viking Legend at $6.50.
