Four-time Group One winner Alamosa will use a jump-out at Sandown to tune him up for an Orr Stakes clash with stablemate Light Fantastic.
Trainer Mick Price said Alamosa would trial over 950 metres at Sandown on Tuesday and Damien Oliver would ride the former New Zealander in the Group One Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday.
"I am very happy with him and I think he should have a good preparation," Price said.
Alamosa won three Group One races in New Zealand before he joined Price's stable last spring and won the Group One Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield.
The four-year-old son of O'Reilly hasn't raced since he failed to run out the 2040 metres in the Cox Plate, finishing seventh to Maldivian who also resumes in the Orr.
Price is timing Alamosa's autumn campaign to get him to his primary mission, the Group One Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick on April 18, on his fourth run.
After the Group One Futurity Stakes (1600m) at Caulfield he will head to Sydney where his Doncaster lead-up is likely to be the Group Two Ajax Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on March 28.
Price hopes that with his headline horse, Light Fantastic, lining up along side Alamosa he can train the quinella on Saturday.
Last year he trained the Orr Stakes winner Shinzig and third placegetter Rubiscent. Only a half head separated them on the line with Niconero splitting the pair.
Price said barrier one beat Light Fantastic when he kicked off his autumn campaign with a gallant second to Lucky Secret in the Carlyon Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on January 23.
"If he had drawn four or five and stalked the winner instead of being dictated to then he wins," Price said.
"He has trained on well and has to be a live chance again."
The Orr's 16 nominations also include 2007 Cox Plate winner El Segundo, who finished fifth in the Carlyon, David Hayes-trained trio Niconero, Von Costa De Hero and Kibbutz, 2007 Caulfield Cup winner Master O'Reilly, 2008 Australian Cup winner Sirmione, Mackinnon Stakes winner Theseo and Zarita.
A foot abscess has delayed the return of Mark Kavanagh's Caulfield Guineas winner Whobegotyou who was to resume in the Listed Wellington Racing Club Stakes (1400m).
However, stablemate and Carbine Club Stakes winner Dr Doute's will launch his AJC Australian Derby campaign in Saturday's feature which also has among its 15 nominations Fravashi, Handsupfordetroit, Lucky Thunder, Miss Scarlatti and Nicconi.
