History is against Black Piranha becoming the first sprinter to claim three Stradbroke Handicaps but trainer Con Karakatsanis believes the record books can be rewritten.

Rough Habit etched his name in Doomben Cup folklore winning three straight Cups from 1991-93 and Karakatsanis can't see why that feat won't be replicated in Saturday's $1 million Group One feature at Eagle Farm.

Black Piranha has firmed into second favouritism at $6 with TAB Sportsbet after drawing barrier three while most of the other top fancies drew poorly for the 1400-metre race.

Rob Heathcote had a mixed bag of draws with Woorim ($6.50) coming up with gate 18 while Buffering ($35) drew 10.

Doomben 10,000 runner-up Love Conquers All drew badly in barrier 16 but remains on the fourth line of betting at $7.50.

Karakatsanis believes Black Piranha is one of the few Stradbroke runners on the way up.

"Any race I put him in I'm confident. He's drawn well and on form he's got the best rider going around in Hugh Bowman," he said.

"The last two years I brought Black Piranha here he came through the Doncaster Handicap but this year we decided to completely miss it.

"Fitness-wise he's at his peak at his third run in. My bloke is just coming right while some of the others are at the end of their campaigns."

Black Piranha finished second in the Group One Doomben 10,000 prior to his first Stradbroke victory in 2009 and was fourth in last year's 10,000 before claiming his second Stradbroke.

The seven-year-old showed he had lost none of his zest for racing when he flew home for a close third to Beaded in last month's Doomben 10,000.

Beaded has retained Stradbroke favouritism at $5.50 despite a horror barrier 17 but the poor draw hasn't shaken jockey Kerrin McEvoy's confidence that the mare can rewrite history herself.

No mare has won the Stradbroke since it was extended from 1200 metres to 1400 metres in 1953 and none has won since 1936.

"Obviously it's disappointing to be drawn out there but she overcame a wide barrier in the race last year to run well," McEvoy said.

"We'll just sit down and work out a game plan but she's pretty adaptable and versatile as to where you can ride her.

"Obviously we need a bit of luck to go our way to slot into a nice spot but she's a tough little mare as we know and her record suggests she can overcome something like this."

Karakatsanis has an unlikely ally in his corner in Ultra Tune boss Sean Buckley.

Buckley owns the Darren Weir-trained Culminate, barrier 12, who is backing up following her fourth to Hurtle Myrtle in the Group Two Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm last week.

"Culminate finished sixth in last year's Stradbroke and I think she's in the top five chances this year," Buckley said.

"I'm expecting her to run very well but if she can't win I'd like to see Black Piranha do it again.

"I bought Black Piranha's mother (Jazztrack) just before he won his second Stradbroke."

One-time Stradbroke favourite Sincero is a $9.50 chance after drawing barrier four.

Sincero made the Stradbroke as the 18th runner and will wear blinkers for the first time after working in the gear at Deagon on Wednesday.

"It's not an ideal draw for him but we can't argue," trainer Stephen Farley said.

"I'd like to see him get back and hopefully come around them. He's got a big stride and needs room to move."
