Comeback galloper Tintern may be given a shot at the Group Three Eclipse Stakes at Sandown on Saturday after claiming his second victory of the spring.

Tintern won over 1700 metres at Sandown on Saturday to give Lloyd Williams' new private trainer Robert Hickmott a win with his first runner.

The five-year-old has been restricted to only nine race starts due to a tendon injury as a three-year-old after he completed a winning hat-trick at Sandown in February 2008.

Tintern, who had been on the market before those three wins, won at his fourth run into his comeback over 1800m at Flemington on Oaks Day and made it two straight over 1700m at Sandown as a $1.45 favourite with a half-head win over Rhyno Chaser.

"He looked like he needed the trip. He was coming back a hundred metres on his last start," stable representative Nick Williams said.

"It was probably a good job.

"The horse from Sydney who ran second has been racing well and has some good form.

"We'll move forward with him, see how he pulls up and, if he's pulled up well, we might run him in the Eclipse next week.

The Willliams team won the 1700m race at Sandown last year with Instructor who backed up a week later to run second to Eskimo Dan in the Eclipse which was run over 2100m.

This year the Eclipse will be run over 1800.

Nick Hall, who is unbeaten in four rides aboard Tintern, believes he can go on to bigger and better things.

"I really like this horse. I think he's a star," he said.

"Im just probably a bit sceptical as to whether he can get a really long trip - I guess we'll find out in time.

"I always had Ollie (Damien Oliver on Rhyno Chaser) as the only one to beat. So I stalked him and got up to him pretty easy.

"But obviously he flattened out a bit the last half furlong (100m) and he was able to almost get to me."

It was a memorable day for Hickmott who replaced John Sadler last week, and the Williams team with Zipping becoming the first horse to win the Sandown Classic (2400m) three times.

"It's terrific. It's great for Rob," Nick Williams said.

"It's great for all of the team at Macedon. As we always say, we're a team operation. There can only be one bloke's name in the book, but it's about everyone."
