Gold Coast trainer Maryann Thexton pulled off a training coup when her talented three-year-old Za Magic scored a huge win in the Listed Sunshine Coast Guineas on Saturday.

Thexton sent Za Magic north to Caloundra trainer Mick Mair's stables on Wednesday in a bid to overcome the horse's nervous demeanour and the plan proved perfect when the gelding led throughout to win by 4-1/2 lengths in the 1600m feature.

"There's a lot that goes on behind the scenes with this horse," Thexton said.

"He gets very nervous and every time we float him somewhere he gets off the truck in a muck lather of sweat.

"So I thought I'd send him up here early to let him settle in and it worked out well."

Gold Coast jockey Glen Colless had no hesitation in sending Za Magic ($11) straight to the front and the gelding coasted home to easily defeat Walk In The Park ($10) with Syndrome ($9) a further 1-1/4 lengths back in third.

Za Magic won the Group Three Doomben Classic three runs back but disappointed on wet tracks in two subsequent runs including his last-start flop in the Queensland Derby.

Thexton said she was unsure whether to start the horse at Caloundra when the track was downgraded to a heavy (10) overnight.

"I got up here and walked the track at seven this morning and I really didn't know how he would cope," Thexton said.

"He didn't handle it at his past two runs but he had no problems today."

Thexton said Za Magic would be immediately spelled and also ruled out any interstate aspirations in the near future.

"I'll let him tell me when he's ready to come back into work again," she said.
