Caulfield trainer Rick Hore-Lacy will resist the temptation of running Spare A Dime in the Winter Cup at Rosehill on Saturday.

He will instead run the talented four-year-old in the Journal Handicap (2400m) at Sandown on Wednesday before aiming him at the $150,000 Banjo Paterson Series Final (2500m) at Flemington on Saturday week.

"We've decided to stay here because we thought the trip up and down to Sydney and then race a week later would be too tough on him," Hore-Lacy said.

"Running at Sandown gives him 10 days to get over it with no travelling.

"It was very tempting to run him in Sydney because of the wet tracks and the dearth of stayers there.

"But there's a $150,000 race for him where he has to be one of the top chances."

Spare A Dime was beaten a nose by Inkster last start over 2400 metres at Sandown on June 13.

"He probably got there a bit early, if he (jockey Mark Pegus) waited another 100 metres the result could have been different," Hore-Lacy said.

Prior to his narrow defeat, Spare A Dime landed consecutive wins including a six-length romp at Bendigo before winning at Sandown over 2400 metres on June 3.

Spare A Dime was a $220,000 yearling and showed enormous potential as a three-year-old.

Hore-Lacy ran him in the Group One South Australian Derby (2500m) and the VRC St Leger (2800m) but he was unplaced in both races.

His future looked dim when he required knee surgery but Hore-Lacy now has the horse going better than ever.

The Jack Denham-trained Nuclear Sky, a last-start winner at Rosehill on June 13, has the topweight of 59.5kg in the Winter Cup (2400m).

Prince Arthur from the Bart Cummings stable has 55.5kg ahead of Alexander Of Hales (54.5kg) while Come On Cugat and Twin Wing will carry 53.5kg.

The other seven nominations are on the minimum of 53kg.
