Star Witness is likely to go into the $1 million Blue Diamond Stakes without another run after he exploded away from his rivals to win the Listed Talindert Stakes at Flemington.

By Starcraft, a winner of five Group One races in four different countries, the colt was a $150,000 purchase at the Magic Millions Premier Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast.

Out of the Group Three and Listed winner Leone Chiara, Star Witness is prepared by Danny O'Brien who is also the managing part-owner.

"He was pretty impressive today," said O'Brien's assistant trainer Gerard Tesoriero.

"He wanted to over-race a bit but I think the key, which we told (jockey) Nick (Hall), was to slot him in behind a horse because once he sees daylight he just wants to go and we saw that today.

"He's a jump and run horse pretty much and we don't push our two-year-olds.

"But he's always shown those early signs so we thought 'why not' we may as well keep kicking on.

"It's been a slow progression with him and he was showing all the good signs and I think he's peaking at this time of year.

"I think we'll go straight into it (the Blue Diamond). He's got plenty of prizemoney now and he seems to run well fresh."

Star Witness was having his second start following a narrow debut victory over 1000m at Moonee Valley on November 28.

Hall bided his time on the $5.50 chance in Saturday's 1100 metre race before unleashing him for a final effort.

He finished strongly once in the clear to score by 1-1/2 lengths from first starter Tricky Tricky ($4.60) with Willow Creek ($3.40 fav) a neck away third.

"He's still fairly new and still has improvement in him," Hall said.

"I think settling him back in the field will do him good in the long-term."

The Group One Blue Diamond (1200m) is run at Caulfield on February 20.
