Talented apprentice Blake Spriggs has been making the most of winter racing in Sydney and is hopeful of continuing a winning sequence when he rides at Randwick on Saturday.

Spriggs moved to town on a three-month loan to the Gai Waterhouse stable in May and said he is loving the experience and hopes to extend his stay.

He has ridden a winner at each of the past five Saturday metropolitan meetings in Sydney and has a book of rides capable of extending the run this week.

"Yeah, five Saturdays in a row I've ridden a winner but I'd like to make it six," Spriggs said.

"It's a big bonus to have the three-kilo claim at this time of year and to be able to ride light."

Spriggs has seven rides at the Randwick meeting, including Dee Bee Nine for Waterhouse, Unser and Deemed for Newcastle trainer Kris Lees and Atomic Force for another Newcastle trainer, Darren Smith.

Spriggs has so far ridden 17 city winners this season and said the competition of Sydney racing is continuing to improve him as a rider.

"I'm loving it and couldn't be happier with the way things are going," he said.

"Gai is really looking after me and giving me a good go.

"It's a lot harder against the better-class riders but I learn a lot off them.

"It's just great to be around them all."

Spriggs knows plenty about Unser, who lines up in the Jim Beam Handicap (1400m), having ridden the gelding in his past eight starts for three wins and three placings.

Atomic Force also had Spriggs aboard when he scored a 4-1/2 length last-start win at Randwick on June 26.

Waterhouse has only two runners at the Randwick meeting and has called on her three-kilo claimer to ride Dee Bee Nine in the Sharp Handicap (1600m).

"His work has been good and he has won and finished second in his two starts this time in," Spriggs said.

The Kim Waugh-trained Delago Star will have Spriggs as the pilot in the McGrath Estate Agents Handicap (1800m), the fourth different apprentice to ride the six-year-old this preparation.

The gelding is yet to miss a place in five outings this campaign and has won on both good and heavy tracks.

"He will love the wet," Spriggs said.

"The heavier the better for him, so it looks like I should have good rides no matter what the track is like."

With the current racing season coming to a close at the end of this month, Spriggs also revealed some ambitions for the season ahead.

"I would love to win the apprentices' premiership," he said.

"And I'd love to keep my spot at Gai's and keep improving.

"It's going to be competitive next season with guys like Tim Bell and Josh Adams, and Brenton (Avdulla), Tommy and Nathan (Berry) are all going to be there still as well.

"It's going to be tough but hopefully I keep improving and with Gai's back-up I can give it a go."
