Imported stayer Speed Gifted has made significant improvement from his Ranvet Stakes placing as he attempts to turn the tables on the in-form Theseo in Saturday's $2.25 million The BMW at Rosehill.

That's the opinion of champion jockey Glen Boss who rode the Group One winner in the Ranvet and in trackwork at Warwick Farm on Tuesday morning.

Boss is booked to ride the Lee Freedman-trained six-year-old in the 2400m weight-for-age contest provided he's free to ride at the meeting.

The jockey is appealing a careless riding suspension incurred at Cranbourne on Sunday and has his case heard by Victoria's Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board on Thursday morning.

Speed Gifted finished less than two lengths behind Theseo in the Group One Ranvet Stakes (2000m) second-up at Rosehill on March 20 and is likely to get conditions in his favour on Saturday stepping up to a more suitable distance.

Acceptances for The BMW were taken on Tuesday and Speed Gifted drew barrier 11 in the field of 12 with Theseo coming up with gate eight.

"He went into the Ranvet probably just short of a run and he definitely felt like he's made good improvement from that run," Boss said after partnering the stayer in a solo workout on the course proper at Warwick Farm.

"He worked better this morning than he did on the Tuesday before the Ranvet so that's a good sign."

Speed Gifted won the Group One Metropolitan in Sydney the last time he stepped up to 2400m and that was on a heavy track at Randwick.

Boss believes track conditions will go a long way to determining Speed Gifted's chances on Saturday.

"On a firm track he's not the same and won't be at home but if he gets a surface to his liking I imagine he could win the race," he said.

"He's just a real mile and a half and beyond horse. His form suggests that, as soon as he gets to that distance he's really competitive.

"He runs handy, gets himself into a spot and is tough to the line and those sort of horses can win BMWs."

Boss, who won The BMW aboard Makybe Diva in 2005 and on Eremein in 2006, is wary of five-time Group One-winning warhorse Theseo but is clinging to the hope the Gai Waterhouse-trained runner is not as strong at 2400m as he is at 1600m and 2000m.

Theseo has won back-to-back Group Ones in the Chipping Norton Stakes and Ranvet Stakes.

However, he was beaten in the BMW last year by Fiumicino.

"Theseo is obviously the measuring stick but I would say this horse (Speed Gifted) is going to be more at home over the mile and a half than Theseo," Boss said.

"If there's ever a doubt over that horse it might be at this trip but he's such a great horse you never know."
