Talented but injury-prone gelding Southern Skye is scheduled to make his return to the track on Saturday after a year on the sidelines.

The Paul Perry-trained five-year-old's last appearance was a fighting short head second to Spinney in the Tattersall's Club Cup (2000m) on New Year's Day.

Plagued by tendon problems which have restricted his career to 18 starts so far, Southern Skye will line up in the New Year's Eve Handicap (1400m) at Rosehill.

"He's had a bit of tendon trouble. He's always had it," Perry said.

"He's come along all right so far this time. I'm hoping he can stay sound and maybe head to the Brisbane winter carnival.

"It's a question of spacing his runs.

"He's had two trials leading into this and they were pleasing."

Southern Skye won the 2009 Geelong Classic and finished fourth in that year's Victoria Derby won by Monaco Consul after which he was out for 12 months.

He came back in October 2010 and performed well in a five-start spring/summer campaign with four minor placings and a close fourth in the Villiers Stakes before he again went amiss.

Apprentice Adam Hyeronimus will take the mount on Southern Skye and is also likely to ride Perry's Magic Millions hopeful Hidden Warrior at Rosehill.

The in-form Hyeronimus has just one more city win before his three-kilogram claim is reduced to two after bringing up his 19th metropolitan victory at the Australian Turf Club meeting at Kembla Grange on Wednesday.

Hidden Warrior and the Gerald Ryan-trained Amorino share topweight in the 1100m two-year-old race with 57kg.

Both will be out to confirm their places in the $2 million Magic Millions Classic at the Gold Coast two weeks later.

Hidden Warrior has finished runner-up at both his starts, the Breeders' Plate in October won by Pierro and behind Hoss Amor in last week's Wyong Millions race.

Amorino has raced just once a for victory at Randwick and has been tuned up for Saturday with a pre-Christmas barrier trial win.
