Peter Snowden hasn't given up on Retrieve as a leading AJC Australian Derby chance.

Retrieve has been a massive drifter for the $1.5 million blue-riband classic since his defeat as a short-priced favourite in Saturday's Tulloch Stakes.

The Victoria Derby placegetter could manage only sixth behind Fast Clip, forcing his quote out to $8 for Saturday's race.

But Snowden, still basking in his first Golden Slipper success, was in a forgiving mood 24 hours later.

"Talk about the highs and lows of racing, I thought he was a certainty," Snowden told Sky Sports Radio.

"In hindsight we probably went in with a game plan that wasn't on the mark.

"The horse ended up in the worst place possible but he has pulled up in excellent condition and he certainly hasn't taken any harm from the run."

Snowden said Retrieve would be ridden on-pace at Randwick.

"We'll be more aggressive in the Derby," he said.

"He's definitely not a sit-and-sprint type of horse."

As a result of Retrieve's failure, Rosehill Guineas winner Jimmy Choux became an even more dominant Derby favourite.

The outstanding New Zealander firmed to $2.20 while Retrieve shares the second line of betting with the Victorian filly Shamrocker.

Trainer John Bary is expected to arrive in Sydney in the next 24 hours to put the finishing touches on Jimmy Choux's Derby preparation.

In AJC Oaks news, Vinery Stud Stakes runner-up Fibrillation has to gallop in the presence of stewards before taking her place in Saturday week's field.

The filly bled from one nostril on saturday and will have an endoscopic examination.

"(Fibrillation) will be required to gallop over 1000m before the stewards prior to its next start," stewards said.

Meanwhile, Maluckyday and Descarado have had their autumn campaigns brought to an end after their BMW flops.

Co-trainer John Hawkes told stewards the Melbourne Cup runner-up Maluckyday would be spelled after the four-year-old finished a lacklustre seventh.

Descarado is also headed to the paddock as trainer Gai Waterhouse's second Golden Slipper day casualty after Theseo was retired when he beat just two home in the George Ryder Stakes.

"They're not machines and at some stage or another they have to retire," she said of Theseo, a true Tulloch Lodge warrior.

Waterhouse brushed aside both disappointments to train a treble, highlighted by More Joyous' victory.
