Peter Snowden believes the class of Retrieve makes the colt his best chance to win a second Group One Spring Champion Stakes on Saturday.

Snowden appears to have a stranglehold on the feature 2000m race for three-year-olds at Randwick, with Retrieve favourite ahead of stablemates Giresun and Erewhon.

"I feel they'll acquit themselves well, but I just think Retrieve might have the class factor that might get him home over the other two," Snowden said.

Two years ago Snowden claimed his first Group One win as head trainer for the powerful Darley team when Sousa streeted the field by six lengths in the Spring Champion.

"That day was great, it was our first one for Darley so it was a special one," Snowden said.

"All Group Ones are significant for me, they are very hard to get.

"It's just lucky this year we've got three good chances, but we've got to get the job done yet."

The Spring Champion is one of four feature Group Ones on Super Saturday at Randwick, and Snowden has been targeting the event with Retrieve and Giresun for several months.

Retrieve had his first five starts in Victoria and was brought to Sydney after a 2-1/4-length win over 1500m at Sandown last month.

The Rahy colt then stamped his Spring Champion credentials by winning the Group Three Gloaming Stakes (1800m) at Rosehill on September 18, defeating Erewhon by 2-1/4 lengths.

"He was strong at the end of 1800 metres, you would think going to 2000 shouldn't be a problem for him and he's done very well since," Snowden said.

Erewhon has been the surprise package with Snowden happy to give him his shot at Group One glory after strong performances at his past three starts.

"He's probably the horse that's had the best grounding for this race," Snowden said.

"He's had two mile (1600m) races and an 1800-metre race so certainly he'll be the toughest horse as far as conditioning goes for the race.

"His last run (in the Gloaming) he did all the work in front, I don't think he's got the class of the other two - Giresun or Retrieve - but he certainly deserves a crack at a race like this."

Unlike Gloaming Stakes starters Retrieve and Erewhon, Giresun was given a different path to the Spring Champion.

His most recent start was a second to Caulfield Guineas fancy Ilovethiscity in the Spring Stakes (1600m) at Newcastle - the same race Sousa won prior to his Spring Champion triumph.

"Everything about him suggests to me that he wants this sort of trip," Snowden said.
