Shocking is favourite to maintain his unbeaten record at Flemington in the Turnbull Stakes but trainer Mark Kavanagh fears the Melbourne Cup winner may be looking for a slightly longer trip than Sunday's 2000 metres.

The Street Cry five-year-old is four for four at headquarters where his wins include the Cup (3200m), the Group Three Lexus Stakes (2500m) and the Group Two Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) two starts back.

"He excels at Flemington, he saves his best for Flemington and you'd like to think he could remain unbeaten here. I hope they win all the time but at this stage I think he's looking for a smidgin longer," Kavanagh said.

"He's more dour now."

Kavanagh was happy with the entire's last-start fifth to So You Think in the Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield when he didn't get clear until well into the straight.

"He didn't get the chance to have a crack at them but that's what happens at Caulfield," he said.

"He just needs a bigger track.

"He's drawn wide (barrier 14), he'll go back, relax and hit the line hard."

Kavanagh said Shocking was more forward mentally and physically than he was at this time last year as he prepares for a crack at back-to-back Melbourne Cups.

Shocking remains $4.50 favourite with TAB Sportsbet but Gold Coast trainer John Wallace has plenty of confidence in Shoot Out and he has firmed from $5 to $4.80 with Typhoon Tracy third pick in the betting at $8.

"He's done well and he'll be hard to beat," Wallace said.

"He's thriving and he had a gallop on the course proper on Tuesday morning and he loved it. I think he goes better this way (left-handed).

"That was the best work he's done since he's been down here.

Wallace said Stathi Katsidis would be able to position the AJC Australian Derby winner fifth or sixth, "maybe closer", from his favourable barrier two draw.

"He'll settle back a bit and he'll be strong at the finish but so will Shocking and a couple of others so he's going to have to be on his game," he said.

"Typhoon Tracy is a great mare and is going to be hard to beat.(Peter) Moody's a good trainer but this horse is going good and I'm pretty confident about his hopes.

"He's hard and tough and he's ready to roll."

Wallace confirmed the High Chaparral four-year-old would run in the Melbourne Cup all going well.

"He'll run two miles (3200m)," he said.

"I feel he's relaxing better every day. We've just taken him slow and steady and he'll have done all the work by then."

Master trainer Bart Cummings won his only Turnbull to date with the great mare Let's Elope in 1991 and he has a two-pronged attack on the race this year with VRC Oaks winner Faint Perfume ($13) and Queensland Derby winner Dariana ($10).

Dariana has a terrific formline, going into the race off a last-start second to stablemate and $2.40 Cox Plate favourite So You Think in the Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield.
