Trainer Peter Moody will delay a decision on whether Set For Fame opens the stable's winter carnival campaign in Saturday's Group One BTC Cup at Doomben.

Moody, who is the leading Group One winning trainer this season, has been rocked by a positive swab from Returntosender following the mare's win at Caulfield on April 3.

Returntosender's swab sample contained the prohibited substances n-butyl hyoscine and dipyrone but no date has been set down for an inquiry by Victoria Racing stewards.

Moody said he was in Sydney when the mare came down with colic and was treated six days before the race.

He was due to fly to Brisbane to inspect Set For Fame early on Wednesday before deciding whether to accept with the three-year-old in Saturday's 1200-metre feature.

"Set For Fame arrived in Brisbane yesterday but I won't know whether I'll accept with her for Doomben until I have a look at her tomorrow morning," Moody said on Tuesday.

Set For Fame missed the AJC Australian Oaks at Randwick with a virus and hasn't started since finishing ninth to Faint Perfume in the Group One Vinery Stud Storm Queen Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on April 3.

Moody has also entered Tee Emar and Arvan for Saturday's Group Three Rough Habit Plate (2020m) but wants to see how both three-year-olds have settled into their new surroundings before confirming starts.

"I might not have any runners on Saturday if I'm not happy with them," he said.

Meanwhile, Hugh Bowman will have an appeal against a careless riding suspension heard next Monday.

Bowman won the Group Two Hollindale Stakes aboard the Chris Waller-trained Metal Bender on Saturday but the victory was tempered by an eight-meeting suspension incurred on Lochiel in the Gold Coast Guineas.

"I pleaded guilty on the day but I've given it plenty of thought and I've decided to appeal," Bowman said.

"I had just won the Hollindale Stakes and it was all a bit rushed when I made the guilty plea.

"It's debatable whether I'm guilty and I've decided to appeal the charge and the severity."

Bowman's suspension was due to expire on May 27 and could cost him the mount on Metal Bender in the Group One Doomben Cup (2020m) on May 22.

However, he will still be free to ride Ortensia in the Group One Doomben 10,000 (1350m) on May 29.

Bowman, who rides Ortensia in the BTC Cup, was suitably impressed when he rode her for the first time in a 600-metre gallop at Doomben on Tuesday.

"She wasn't out to break any records but she worked a lot stronger than I expected," he said.

"I'm riding her in her next two runs and it's my understanding I can ride her right through if she races well on Saturday and in the Doomben 10,000."

Bowman was booked to ride Ortensia after regular jockey Craig Williams took up a contract to ride in Japan for leading trainer Noriyuki Hori.

Trainer Tony Noonan said when he first booked Bowman that Williams had not been given a guarantee he would be reunited with Ortensia after he completed his commitments in Japan.

Williams rode Ortensia last start when she won the Group One The Galaxy (1100m) at Randwick last month.
