Star colt Sepoy has posted a comprehensive win in the Group One Manikato Stakes at a rain soaked Moonee Valley.

He became the first three-year-old since Redoute's Choice in 1999 to win the 1200m weight-for-age sprint.

Although he was slow out of the gates, Kerrin McEvoy hunted him up along the rail to beat off the speedy Buffering and assume the lead.

Sepoy kicked on the home turn and went on to beat Sister Madly by a widening margin with More Joyous third.

The champion two-year-old of last season, Sepoy is trained by Peter Snowden for Sheikh Mohammed's Darley Australia.

McEvoy said he was a little concerned at the start but Sepoy handled the wet track and the bungled start with ease.

"I was a tad worried the first coupe of strides but he's got the early speed to hold his spot," McEvoy said.

"He's got all the talent in the world and is a great horse to be a part of.

"It's a dream ride and a nice journey to be on."

Snowden said it was unlikely Sepoy would meet Black Caviar this spring with the plan to run against his own age in the Coolmore Stakes on October 29 when Sheikh Mohammed will be at Flemington.
