Evergreen galloper Sensational Swing has marked his 100th career start with a fairytale win at Sale.
Trained by Dianne Wynne and ridden in every start by her daughter Sally, the 10-year-old defied his odds as the rank outsider at $26 in the six-horse field to land the Australian Valve Group Handicap (1200m).
Sensational Swing raced wide most of the way and stormed home from second last to the cheers of the crowd to score in a photo-finish from Xanthos ($5) and Monarch's Rule ($11).
"I am just so excited, very thrilled," Dianne Wynne said.
She said she feared Sensational Swing wasn't finishing fast enough but Sally said she knew when he started to make ground from back in the field that he would win.
"The last couple of starts the track has been a bit hard for him and he hasn't really let down but on straightening when I was within striking distance I thought `I am home'," the jockey said.
"We live in dreams and dreams are what this game is made of. It is unbelievable."
At his previous start Sensational Swing finished 10th in similar class over 1400 metres at Sale two weeks ago.
He has raced every year since winning his race debut as a three-year-old at Bairnsdale in August 2002.
Now the winner of eight races with 13 seconds and 12 thirds, his Sale win took his career earnings to $204,900.
Dianne Wynne said Sensational Swing was a handful to train but Sally knew his idiosyncrasies.
"He's been a funny horse from day one," Dianne said.
"He would buck, run over the top of you and was spooky.
"He hasn't changed and we love him. He is part of the family now."
Sally Wynne said she had her testy moments with Sensational Swing but had enjoyed the association.
"I have done everything with him his entire career and he has hurt me a few times but I still love him to death," she said.
Dianne Wynne said the journey with Sensational Swing had been memorable.
"This wasn't planned. It just happened. We just kept bringing him up each year and the owners stuck with us," she said.
"It has been great."
She said her only regret was that Sensational Swing has not managed to win a city race. He has finished second at Moonee Valley, Flemington and Sandown.
"I am just disappointed we never cracked one in town," Wynne said,.
She said there no plans to retire Sensational Swing at this stage.
"He is sound, enjoys racing and he is great to have around," Wynne said.
