New Zealand trainer John Sargent has arrived in Australia with a three-strong team to test the Sydney horses on Saturday - and the race callers.

Red Ruler is simple enough to say but stablemates Il Quello Veloce and Ruud Van Slaats could present a challenge.

Sargent is not expecting Red Ruler to win the Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) with longer races in his future but he has high hopes for Il Quello Veloce in the Surround Stakes (1400m) and Ruud Van Slaats in the Wiggle Quality over the same distance.

He warned punters not to look at Ruud Van Slaats in the enclosure but to study her form instead.

"She is a very big mare with terrible front legs," Sargent said.

"One goes one way and the other goes the other way.

"When you look at her you would never think she could gallop but once she's out there on the track, she goes pretty straight.

"And she goes well."

The four-year-old has won five of her 12 starts and been placed four times, including third at her past two runs in Group One races won by leading Doncaster contender Mufhasa.

She gets into the Wiggle on 53.5kg with favourite Hot Danish to carry 61.

"If she is to have a chance in a race like the Coolmore then she would have to perform well against Hot Danish at the weights," he said.

"She is an on-pace runner and this race will let us know if she can step up to the big races."

Il Quello Veloce was the champion two-year-old filly in New Zealand in 2007-08 and has won three of her seven starts this season.

She has drawn barrier two of 20 in the Surround field of 16 plus four emergencies and will have the services of the in-form Jim Cassidy.

"She's the top filly in New Zealand and I'm hoping she can measure up to the top fillies here and get up to a mile (1600m)," Sargent said.

Il Quello Veloce has won five races up to 1400 metres and ran a close second to Tell A Take at her only start at 1600 in the New Zealand 2000 Guineas in November.

While he believes the field will be too nippy over 1600 metres for Red Ruler, Sargent expects the four-year-old to be running on.

"He is here for the Ranvet and the BMW but I still expect him to go well," he said.

"He was a very immature horse last year and even last spring but has grown mentally and physically.

"Long term the Melbourne Cup is the aim."

Red Ruler's best Australian performance was last autumn when he ran second to fellow Kiwi Nom Du Jeu in the AJC Australian Derby.

Nom Du Jeu will be one of his rivals in the Chipping Norton Stakes and will follow the same autumn path to the BMW (2400m) on April 4.
