David Payne may be a naturalised Australian but when it comes to cricket his South African heritage shines through.

The trainer and jockey Jeff Lloyd, another transplanted South African, will join forces at Randwick on Thursday determined to keep the momentum going.

The historic Test series win by South Africa over Australia has Payne revved up ahead of the New Year's Day features in which he will saddle up Kettledrum in the Tattersalls Cup (2000m) and Hairy in the Carrington Stakes (1100m).

"I'm an Australian now, but I can switch, and it is great to see South Africa do so well," Payne said.

"And we did win the Rugby World Cup as well remember."

The Tattersalls Cup is not quite as big but Payne believes the trophy will go the South Africans' way with Kettledrum primed to win.

Payne opted not to run the four-year-old in the Summer Cup (2400m) on Boxing Day and is happy with that decision.

"I think he will be better suited over the 2000 metres at this stage," he said.

"He is very fit and well and ready to run a big race."

Hairy is also ready to run a big race in the Carrington Stakes at her first start for almost three months.

The mare has an impressive record of two wins and two placings from four first-up starts.

"She has drawn barrier two and should be able to get the run of the race from there," Payne said.

"I think she can get back to winning form."

Hairy won the Listed Sheraco Stakes (1100m) second-up on August 30 but failed to run a place in four subsequent spring starts.

Her racing pattern is to get back in the field and run home strongly but she has been stopped in her tracks on several recent occasions.

Hairy was on the fourth line of betting on TAB Sportsbet's first markets at $8 with Tenants Tiara the popular elect ahead of Star Of Crown ($5) and Illuminates at $7.

Kettledrum was a $10 chance in the Tattersalls Cup with Alverta ($4.40) edging Penrickson ($4.60) for favouritism.

Lloyd's brother in law Glyn Schofield will ride Tommifrancs who is an $8 chance and backing up from his four lengths fifth to stablemate Ready To Lift in the Summer Cup.
