Bargain buy Regal Castanea will test his credentials for next year's Brisbane winter carnival when he chases three Listed feature races in Brisbane in the coming months.

Regal Castanea recorded his third victory from his past four starts with a bulldog-like finish to win the Auswaste Recycling Plate (1400m) by 1-1/4 lengths at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

Trainer Ron Macrae immediately signalled his intention to give the four-year-old a short break before aiming for the Listed Brisbane Handicap (1600m) at Eagle Farm on November 15.

The son of Sequalo will then head to the Listed Recognition Stakes (1400m) on the same track on November 29 before the Listed Bernborough Handicap (1615m) at Doomben in January.

It's the same path Macrae travelled with his former top performer Kiwi Warrior who won the Brisbane Handicap in 2001 before going on to finish second in the two other summer features.

Regal Castanea has been a great money spinner for connections taking his prizemoney to $172,500 with five wins and six placings from 18 starts.

Macrae showed some shrewd judgment when he paid only $25,000 for Regal Castanea at the Magic Millions yearling sales.

"I got him off Jeff Kruger from Lyndhurst Stud for $25,000 after he was passed in for that price," Macrae said.

"I went to the stud to look at him and they wanted $50,000 initially but I waited for the sales and got him a lot cheaper when he was passed in."

Macrae has a good opinion of Regal Castanea who has struck up a formidable partnership with winning jockey Scott Galloway.

"I'll give him a break and run him in the three Listed features over a mile that are coming up soon," Macrae said.

"He's a horse who specialises at 1400 metres at the moment but Scott (Galloway) has no doubt he'll run 1600 metres and possibly 2000 metres.

"I'll give him a decent spell after the summer and get him ready for the winter.

"At this stage I'd like to think he's a Stradbroke chance but there's a lot of water to go under the bridge first."

Macrae had a lot of fun with Kiwi Warrior who only won five times in a 41-start career but still earned almost $240,000 in prizemoney.

Macrae sent Kiwi Warrior to Sydney as a three-year-old where he failed in three Group One races in the Canterbury and Rosehill Guineas before finishing 11th to Universal Prince in the AJC Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick in 2001.
