Gerald Ryan looked through the history of the Pago Pago Stakes and it was more than enough for him to be comfortable with the decision to run Golden Slipper hopeful Hinchinbrook on Saturday.

Hinchinbrook is the highest-rated colt in betting for the $3.5 million Golden Slipper and will have a quick back-up into the April 3 feature after Saturday's Group Two Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill.

The three-quarter brother to Snitzel is undefeated from two starts in the Canonbury Stakes and Skyline Stakes and Ryan doesn't expect running in the Pago Pago on Saturday will be anything but a benefit heading into the Slipper.

He said the colt came through his last-start win in great order and was bouncing out of his skin on the Monday after the race.

"In January I mapped out a program for him and left three weeks between the Skyline and the Slipper which left me enough time if I either wanted to trial him or give him another start," Ryan said.

"After looking at the history of the Pago Pago I decided to run him this week. Stratum backed up to win the Slipper and Inspired backed up to win the Slipper too, that was enough for me."

Stratum (2005), Rory's Jester (1985) and Inspired (1984) have claimed the Pago Pago and Golden Slipper double since the Pago Pago was first run in 1978.

Hinchinbrook's two victories haven't been by big margins but both times he demonstrated two very good qualities that pleased his trainer.

"Determination and acceleration," Ryan said when asked what he liked from both performances.

"And his ability to cope with racing."

The Fastnet Rock youngster showed a willingness to go between horses from back in the field and attack the line when he won the Skyline Stakes at Randwick, defeating Brightexpectations by a short head.

"I've found that on the track (at trackwork) too," Ryan said.

"He finds the line all the time."

Ryan didn't see a lot of sense in keeping Hinchinbrook at home in his box on Saturday when there was a Group Two race on offer on his home track.

"If he wins on Saturday he wins a Group Two worth $150,000," he said.

"What if he stays at home and then comes out and draws 16 in the Slipper next week? There's no use sitting back and waiting, you might as well try and take what we can on the way. And I'm not worried about him backing up in seven days."

Hinchinbrook drew barrier five in the Pago Pago with Stathi Katsidis to take the ride in the field of 12.

Darren Beadman will be aboard in the Golden Slipper the following week.
