Related proved he had well and truly shaken off his Golden Slipper hangover with his commanding victory in the Listed Hawkesbury Guineas.

The Bart Cummings-trained colt stormed into contention for next month's Queensland Guineas (1600m) after his victory in the 1400-metre feature on Saturday in front of a record crowd of 14,251.

Stable foreman John Thompson said Cummings admitted it was a mistake to target the Slipper with the colt.

"It was a great example of Golden Slipper burnout," Thompson said.

"But the boss realised he made a mistake going for the Slipper and gave him three months off."

Related started at $8 in the 2008 Golden Slipper but was never a chance and finished 14th to Sebring.

Saturday's victory was the Elusive Quality colt's first and Thompson was in awe of jockey Chris Munce.

"You're on fire," Thompson told Munce in the winners' enclosure.

Munce had Related ($6) just off the speed before giving the colt a chance to show what he's got in the closing stages and the three-year-old did not disappoint, letting down with a big run to defeat Rollins ($31) by a half-length with The Astronomer ($5) a short neck away third.

"I thought he'd be further back than that but Chris read it well, what a great ride that was," Thompson said.

"We came here not thinking he'd win but we thought he'd run a race."

Munce was impressed with Related.

"He's still a bit keen but he's a quality horse," Munce said.

"He will only get better, he's only had a few runs."

Related was having his seventh start and his previous best result was a nose second in the Group Two Todman Stakes in April last year.

The flop of the race was $3.70 favourite Yesterday who finished seventh.

The Group Two Queensland Guineas (1600m) is at Eagle Farm on June 6.

Related's victory gave Munce a feature race double after he steered Lyncean Academy home in the Rowley Mile for trainer Guy Walter.

Trainer Peter Snowden celebrated a winning double after Testimonial claimed the BTW Communications Handicap (1200m) in a thrilling finish where he defeated stakes winner Voice Commander by a short neck with Comepsa a long head away third.

The Snowden-trained two-year-old Kanzan scored a debut victory in the opening race of the day.
