Magic Model has booked herself a berth in next month's Group One $1 million Golden Rose with a thrilling last stride win on a heavy Randwick track.

The two-year-old, who started at $4.40, upset the Gai Waterhouse-trained favourite Gigas ($2.35) by a short half head with the gallant Lucky Elmo ($16) a long head third in Saturday's Still An Inspiration Handicap (1400m).

Jockey Glyn Schofield had Magic Model racing in fourth spot for most of the trip before the big striding Choisir filly hit top gear in the closing stages and overhauled the leading pair.

Magic Model continued David Payne's amazing run with two-year-olds this season with the trainer estimating the victory to be the stable's 14th from eight individual runners.

Payne said he was likely to have a two-pronged attack in the Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill on August 29 with Magic Model to join More Than Great who won at Rosehill last Saturday.

Magic Model's victory follows her win over the same trip at Rosehill on June 27.

"It was a different type of performance today, she had to really chase them down where as the other start she hit the lead near the top of the straight," Payne said.

"She wasn't ever comfortable on the heavy (9) going, the same as she wasn't the other week but once you hit her with the stick a couple of times she really lifts.

"We'll take her and More Than Great to the Rose now."

Schofield has ridden the filly in her last two starts and said Magic Model had more than talent going for her.

"Last time she hit the lead and showed tremendous heart to stick on and today the race was the other way around for her but the heart was there again, she's a very determined filly and that coupled with her ability will take her a long way," Schofield said.
