David Payne has a pretty good measuring stick in Golden Rose favourite Masquerader and says Sea Lord is potentially almost as good.

It is a big wrap for the lightly-raced colt who will make his black-type debut in Saturday's Up And Coming Stakes (1200m) at Warwick Farm.

When asked about Sea Lord's prospects in the Group Three event, Payne said he wouldn't be surprised if the colt ran a big race.

"He might be nearly as good as Masquerader the way he works," Payne said.

"He's got to put it together that's all."

The son of Street Cry finished runner-up on a heavy track at Canterbury over 1250m last month at his only race appearance to date.

Payne said the colt probably beat himself that day through inexperience.

"He missed the break a bit and Nash (Rawiller) might have went a bit early on him," he said.

"It was just inexperience."

The Rosehill trainer, who watched Masquerader produce an eye-catching return with a big weight in last Saturday's Group Three Run To The Rose, said Sea Lord had made significant improvement since his debut and would be better for the experience.

The three-year-old is among the early nominations for the Caulfield Guineas and the Cox Plate and Payne said it was important to get the colt racing and learning his craft.

"He's in all the three-year-old Classics, we'll see how he goes," he said.

"He's got to step up and we'll go from there."

The Warwick Stakes meeting also looms as a significant day for Payne with the Australian debut of UAE Oaks winner Raihana in the Listed Toy Show Quality (1400m).

The Elusive Quality mare, raced by Sheik Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, was sent to Payne to train after finishing second to Musir in the UAE Derby earlier this year.

"We've got to see how that form is compared to this form," Payne said.

"She was racing against fillies there and we don't know how good they are. It will be interesting."

Raihana has been given a 1030m barrier trial at Rosehill earlier this month to get her ready for the first-up assignment with Payne opting for the Toy Show instead of the Group Two Warwick Stakes at weight-for-age.

"She's about 80 per cent (fit) so she can be competitive, but there's improvement in her," the trainer said.

"That race will tell us where we're going."
