First-up expectations for two of Patinack Farm's best-performed racehorses - Trusting and Gathering - are being kept in check ahead of their return to racing.
Trusting and Gathering will join a host of stars who will launch their spring campaigns in the $175,000 Group Two Warwick Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm on Saturday.
The weight-for-age race confirmed Trusting's promise in 2009 when he swept to victory as an early season three-year-old.
But with the exception of George Main Stakes and Epsom Handicap placings in 2010 it's been slim pickings since for the entire.
And on what Trusting has shown in two preparatory trials, the Patinack team is reluctant to declare the five-year-old ready for more Warwick Stakes heroics, even with New Zealand's record-breaking apprentice jockey James McDonald in the saddle.
"Trusting has looked pretty dour in his trials and John (trainer John Thompson) and (owner) Nathan (Tinkler) will wait and see how he goes on Saturday," Patinack Farm racing manager Robyn Hartney said.
"He might need a bit further."
McDonald was left without a Warwick Stakes mount when trainer Grahame Begg decided not to run All Silent.
The ride on Trusting then became available after Noel Callow's sudden return to Malaysia.
"I don't think he (McDonald) has had a ride for us before," Hartney said.
"We did try to book him a couple of times when he was riding in Brisbane but we weren't able to get him."
Hartney said Patinack head trainer Thompson was focused on targets deeper into the spring for both horses.
"The 1400 metres suits first-up but both will improve with the run," she said.
Gathering, a Craig Williams mount, resumes with his earnings closing in on $1 million.
The bulk of the five-year-old's prize money was earned from his Railway Stakes win at Ascot in November - a Group One race in which Trusting was three lengths away in sixth.
Well-credentialled filly Pane In The Glass, another Williams ride, is expected to carry Patinack hopes for Warwick Stakes day success when she resumes in the Group Three Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m).
"You have to forget about her last trial," Hartney said.
"(She) was a bit slow away, got back to last and didn't have anywhere to go.
"John is extremely happy with her and he was happy with her work at Randwick this (Tuesday) morning."
