Firmly entrenched as one of Brisbane's best young trainers, Steven O'Dea will chase another big pay day at the Gold Coast on Saturday.
O'Dea trained Amber's Crown to win the $150,000 QTIS 600 Plate at Ipswich on Monday and he is hoping his luck holds with Geblitzt and Bianca Jewel at the Gold Coast feature meeting.
Three years ago, O'Dea was a virtual unknown in major racing circles who was content to ply his trade from Townsville and nurture his craft across far northern Queensland tracks.
Then fate stepped in. O'Dea's main stable client at the time Joe Rapisarda gave him a grey filly to train by Mull Of Kintyre who later raced as Kiss Me Katy.
So impressed by Kiss Me Katy was O'Dea that he took the juvenile filly to Brisbane with former Sydney galloper Go Cart on what was meant to be a three-month trip.
Kiss Me Katy quickly confirmed O'Dea's high assessment by winning three of her first four Brisbane starts and convinced the trainer to have a shot at the big time.
"I was never meant to move here when I came down in 2009," O'Dea said.
"But we had some luck in the first few months with horses like Go Cart and Kiss Me Katy and I got some good owners and decided to stay.
"It was a gamble at the time but I've trained 30 winners this season and things are going nicely."
O'Dea has booked gun Sydney hoop Corey Brown for Geblitzt in the $150,000 Silk Stocking (1200m) while Bianca Jewel's regular partner Ryan Wiggins will ride her in the $125,000 Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m).
"They're both going really well and I'm certain they will both race well on Saturday," O'Dea said.
"I will get a guide on where to go next after Saturday but they will both be good chances."
Geblitzt won first-up from a spell at Doomben in March but has raced without luck at her past two runs and O'Dea is relying on Brown's expertise to resurrect the Test Rossa mare's winter carnival campaign.
Bianca Jewel scored a decisive win in the Listed Princess Stakes (1600m) at her most recent run and the way she found the line indicated she was looking for the extra trip on Saturday.
That win took the filly's record to four wins and four placings from 12 runs and O'Dea is hoping she will emerge from the Bracelet as a Queensland Oaks contender.
