While the nation's leading jockeys descend on Melbourne, top Victorian apprentice Jake Noonan is bucking the trend and will showcase his talents in Sydney for the first time at Rosehill.

Noonan leads this season's Melbourne apprentices' premiership with 10 winners and has four Rosehill rides on Saturday including Group One winner Dealer Principal.

The 17-year-old is apprenticed to his father Tony Noonan and has made a big impression in Melbourne in the past 12 months, including riding a treble at Flemington in August.

He juggles Year 12 studies at Padua College in Mornington along with his riding apprenticeship, and just this week completed his final school classes.

He has his VCE exams beginning next week.

"Wednesday was my last day of classes and then muck-up day was on Thursday," Noonan said.

The youngster is excited about his Sydney debut, having previously spent time on work experience with Gai Waterhouse at Randwick.

"I've gone up to Sydney on a few occasions but this is the first time I'll ride in a race up there," he said.

"I've been up three times and stayed for a week each time riding work and a couple of barrier jumpouts.

"That was probably over the past two years, but not so much since I started race riding because I've been pretty busy.

"I really enjoyed the time I spent there, it was busy with a lot of good horses in work.

"It was great to get a feel of some good horses and ride work with Blake (Shinn) and Nash (Rawiller) who are two of my idols."

Noonan doesn't have any rides for Waterhouse at Rosehill but has two for Gerald Ryan (Keffiya and Follow My Lead), one for Anthony Cummings (Dealer Principal) and another for John Thompson (Schipper).

He was also booked to ride Altier but the Greg Hickman-trained gelding has been scratched from the fourth event.

Nine apprentices will be in action at Rosehill as the bulk of Sydney's top senior hoops are in Melbourne for the spring carnival.

Noonan is aware his Sydney excursion is a chance to impress a new audience.

"I've loved Sydney when I've stayed up there," he said.

"There's been many jockeys from Melbourne who have moved up there and stuck by the move. I wouldn't be surprised, if I'm successful enough, if I maybe have a stint in Sydney at some stage.

"It's good, strong racing and it could be an option for me in the future."

Dealer Principal, a last-start eighth in the Group One Epsom Handicap, has 61kg but will carry 59kg with Noonan's two-kilo allowance in the Cincotta Chemist Marrickville Handicap (2000m).

"On his day he's a Group One horse and he is down a bit in class (on Saturday)," Noonan said.
