Embattled jockey Danny Nikolic escaped with a caution at Sandown on Saturday after an inquiry into a verbal altercation he had with a Racing Victoria Limited steward.

Acting chairman James Williams heard evidence from Nikolic who had earlier handed a letter of apology to stewards for his behaviour at last Wednesday's Sandown meeting.

Williams told Nikolic the steward in question, Taylor Wilson, had accepted the jockey's apology.

"We are not going to proceed with this matter but as a professional jockey we expect you to conduct yourself professionally at all times," Williams told Nikolic at the inquiry.

Nikolic will be told by RVL stewards next week whether they will lay charges after an inquiry into 10 of his beaten rides, and the betting on those events, was completed on Friday.

Nikolic was accompanied by his legal representative, Sydney lawyer Paul O'Sullivan, when he appeared before stewards on Friday morning.

The inquiry has taken 3-1/2 months and began after Nikolic was beaten into second place aboard $1.60 favourite Finishing Card in a maiden at Mornington on January 8.

The jockey so far faces a charge of using a mobile phone without the permission of stewards at the Flemington meeting on January 1.

Nikolic has decided not to contest a $5000 fine handed down by the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board after he refused to hand over his mobile phone to stewards so that his contacts could be checked.
