Gold Coast stayer Teary Eyed has trainer John Morrisey second-guessing about his Grafton Cup prospects on Thursday.

Teary Eyed is one of the top betting picks in the $150,000 2350m feature but Morrisey is ignoring the odds as he takes a conservative line on the horse's chances.

The five-year-old, who is Morrisey's first Grafton Cup runner, will be lining up for his 12th and final start of a marathon campaign.

"He is going for a spell after the race and I just hope I haven't given him one start too many," Morrisey said.

"Having said that, he is holding his form and when they put these races on you've got to be in them.

"But you never know when they are going to hit the brick wall."

Since returning to the track in January, Teary Eyed has managed to win three restricted class races to earn his chance in two features at the tailend of the Queensland winter carnival.

Leading jockey Chris Munce will ride Teary Eyed after being on board when the gelding finished fourth in the Ipswich Cup and third to Ironstein in the Caloundra Cup on July 3.

Morrisey says Ironstein, the $2.50 favourite, deserves his place at the top of early markets.

"Ironstein is the horse to beat again because he can take up a position and make his own luck," Morrisey said.

With Teary Eyed winning twice and being placed twice in heavy going, Morrisey is hoping Thursday's weather forecast takes a turn for the worse.

"In reality he's probably a better horse on a wet track but it doesn't look like we are going to get that," he said.

Teary Eyed occupies the third line of Grafton Cup betting at $6.50.
