Multiple stakes winner Hoystar has a new-found maturity which trainer Chris Waller is hoping will result in victory in Saturday's Group Two Challenge Stakes at Randwick.

The striking five-year-old begins his autumn campaign in the 1000-metre race with Waller looking at the Group One The Galaxy (1100m) at Randwick next month for Hoystar.

The Danzero gelding has won six of his 16 starts including the Group Three Star Kingdom and Group Three Clissold Stakes last year.

But those wins were for trainer Peter Snowden and Hoystar is yet to score for Waller after five starts but has been stakes-placed three times for the Rosehill horseman.

"From what he's showed this time in his two barrier trials he knows his job now and has definitely matured significantly," Waller said.

"The most important thing is that he knows how to switch off and we'll see that on the weekend.

"They'll be going very quickly and that will suit him, he'll just go out the back and be saved for the run home."

Hoystar had his first start for Waller in the Listed Show County Quality in August last year when he started favourite but missed the kick before rattling home to run second to Bank Robber.

The gelding is majority-owned by the Ingham family and was the first of their horses to step out for Waller since he was appointed trainer of their new enterprise following Bob Ingham's decision to sell his famous Woodlands breeding and racing concern to Sheikh Mohammed's Darley operation.

Hoystar has been his own worst enemy for Waller, missing starts and hanging in during races.

Bad luck has also plagued him.

Hoystar was $1.90 favourite in the Group Two Theo Marks Stakes in September last year and was travelling nicely until the rider of Forensics, Kerrin McEvoy, shifted in when insufficiently clear of Hoystar who was checked and lost his running near the 100 metres.

Hoystar finished seventh and Forensics ran a half-neck second to Hurried Choice in the feature.
