New Zealander Capecover could be a surprise starter in next Saturday's Metropolitan Handicap in a bid to cement a Caulfield Cup berth.

Capecover as doing his best work late when seventh in the JRA Cup (2040m) at Moonee Valley on Friday night after losing ground shortly before the home turn when he hit the running rail.

"We will probably weigh up our options tomorrow," trainer Alexander Fieldes told NZPA.

Capecover needs to win a major race if he is to make the field for the Caulfield Cup on October 18 and the main decision is whether to head to Sydney for the Metropolitan Handicap (2400m) at Randwick.

"It looks as if the field is falling away a little and that could be a good race for him," Fieldes said.

The downside is the travel.

If he stays in Melbourne, Capecover could tackle either The Bart Cummings (2500m) at Flemington on October 4 or the Group Two Winning Edge Presentations Stakes (2400m) at Caulfield on October 11.

Winning the latter race would make him exempt from the Caulfield Cup ballot.

But Fieldes is worried he might struggle to make the field for the Winning Edge.

If he doesn't make it to the Caulfield Cup, Fieldes will look to either the Geelong Cup or Moonee Valley Cup as races to qualify him for the Melbourne Cup.

He was pleased with the effort of Capecover to recover from a check during the JRA Cup.

"He lost about three lengths when he was coming between runners and hit the fence and lost his momentum," he said.

The Anthony Cummings-trained Red Lord holds sway in Metropolitan betting at $3.40 with Capecover currently a $15 chance.

Get Up Jude guaranteed himself a start with victory over Tangalooma and Fiumicino in on Saturday's Colin Stephen Quality (2400m) and is at $12.

Cummings preferred not to run Red Lord again after his close second to Hurrah in the Kingston Town Stakes two weeks ago.

Instead he opted to run him and Epsom Handicap favourite Red Lord in a 1200m barrier trial at Randwick on Friday.

Raheeb won the trial with Red Lord a comfortable third.
