New Zealander Capecover has done plenty of travelling recently but trainer Alexander Fieldes believes the gelding will feel right at home on the big Randwick track in Saturday's Metropolitan Handicap.

The six-year-old comes into the Group One, 2400-metre race after enduring a torrid run when seventh to Cefalu in the Listed JRA Cup (2040m) at Moonee Valley last Friday.

Prior to that Capecover scored impressively in the Listed Tokyo City Cup (1600m) at Morphettville on September 13.

"He hit the running rail a couple of times at Moonee Valley and didn't handle the tight track at all but he did his best work in the last 150 metres and I think the big Randwick track will suit him," Fieldes said.

"This was always going to be the race for him but he's just gone a strange way about getting here.

"He's only had one start going the Sydney way but he's been working that way every second day for the last four years and if anything I think he prefers it."

Fieldes concedes that Capecover is unlikely to get a start in the Caulfield Cup on October 18 but he hasn't given up on the Melbourne Cup.

"Even if he wins this race tomorrow, he would only get a kilo (penalty) for Caulfield and 51kg will not be enough for a run in the Cup," Fieldes said.

"But the Melbourne Cup could be on the cards and we could look at races like the Saab Quality, Geelong Cup or Moonee Valley Cup."

Capecover won the Group Three Metropolitan Handicap (2500m) at Riccarton last year and Fieldes believes that will count for something tomorrow.

"It's a big step up but winning the equivalent race cannot be discounted," Fieldes said.

Peter Robl has the ride on Capecover.

"I've heard good things about Peter and provided he can give the horse a nice, quiet ride, he'll be flying home," Fieldes said.

TAB Sportsbet has Capecover at $14 along with Get Up Jude while the Anthony Cummings-trained Red Lord is the $2.80 favourite.

Red Lord was beaten a half-head by Hurrah last start in the Group Three Kingston Town Stakes (2000m) when chasing a winning hat-trick.

The John Hawkes-trained Fiumicino, who won the Group Two Hill Stakes (1900m) two starts back, is the second favourite for the Metropolitan at $6.

Bianca, from the Gai Waterhouse stable, is third in the betting at $7 and is coming off a slashing victory in the Group Three Newcastle Cup (2300m) on September 18 after winning the Listed Wyong Cup (2100m) 10 days earlier.
