A few years ago, pottering around with sales cast-offs was the main fare for young trainer Paul Messara.
But in a sign of how far he has come in a short time, he will chase his second Group One victory at Randwick on Saturday when Beneteau lines up in the Champagne Stakes (1600m).
Messara celebrated his first major this autumn when sales reject and stud failure Alverta claimed the Group One Coolmore Classic.
She will tackle Saturday's Listed Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) before embarking on a sprint campaign in England.
Messara will also be represented in Thursday's Listed Gosford Guineas (1200m) by the promising Flowerchild and while he is rapt with the stable's recent success he modestly suggests good luck has been a factor.
"We don't have that many numbers, we only have about 30 in work but this year we've been lucky a few horses have been able to improve and stay sound," Messara said.
One of those horses is Beneteau.
Six weeks ago the colt's autumn appeared to be over when he finished second last as odds-on favourite in the Skyline Stakes won by Hinchinbrook.
Many thought a tough run in the Blue Diamond Stakes three weeks earlier, when he was an unlucky third to Star Witness, may have taken its toll.
But Messara managed to turn the two-year-old around and he bounced back to finish an eye-catching fifth to Crystal Lily in the Golden Slipper.
He is the only runner from that race who will line up in the Champagne Stakes on Saturday and while the distance is a query, the colt's wellbeing is not.
"It's been a good effort from all the staff and the horse is as well as he was going into the Blue Diamond," Messara said.
"I don't know if he'll get the trip, we'll find out on Saturday, but as long as he relaxes hopefully he will."
The Champagne usually attracts a small field with only a handful of two-year-olds still standing at the end of a long autumn campaign.
Onemorenomore beat just five rivals last year and 12 months earlier Samantha Miss lined up against just seven opponents.
But a capacity field of 15 will tackle the Group One on Saturday, with two emergencies to boot.
Among them are Yosei and Skilled who ran the quinella in the Sires' Produce Stakes, along with Fernhill Handicap winner Kudakulari and Victorian Toorak Toff.
Beneteau will be ridden by Michael Rodd and has drawn well in barrier five.
"Usually there are only half a dozen runners in this race. I would have preferred that because there would have been fewer horses for him to go around and he's had some bad luck at his past couple," Messara said of the backmarker.
"But he's drawn well which will help in the big field."
